When the Romans invaded Britain from AD 43 for the next nearly 400 years, Northwich became known as Condate. This is thought to mean ‘confluence’. In this, the confluence of the river Weaver and Dane.
Northwich was significant enough to the Romans that is appeared on two Romans roads, Route X and Route II. The importance of Northwich appears to come from it’s strategic river crossing and the salt brines.
This is ultimately where Northwich gets it’s name from. ‘Wic’ is the Norse for bay, which was also a common place for salt to be obtained, by evaporating salt water. Other places with the later derived ‘wich’ extension are Nantwich and Leftwich. Norwich, of course, is the Northern most ‘wich’ town in the area we now call Cheshire.
Today Northwich is a thriving vibrant town of over 50,000 people. This includes the spectacular Barons Quay development.
It is also the birthplace of the rather fabulous Jennifer Saunders as well as The Charlatans’ Tim Burgess.
Places close by
Northwich is actually surrounded by many villages with just a couple of miles. Hartford is just 2 miles away but has been around since at least 1086 when it is mentioned in the Domesday book. With many Grade II listed buildings, including the 16th century Hartford Hall it is a delightful village of just over 5,000 inhabitants.
Also close by is Rudheath. Slightly smaller than Hartford you can still get to us in 10 minutes in the car. Wincham is equally close by and a similar size to Ruheath. Slightly further afield is Davenham. Another Domesday Book hamlet from 1086, but still just ten minutes away.
Barnton, or “Jam Town”, is only 2.5 miles from Northwich and of a similar size to Hartford in terms of population. Moulton, or Moletune as it was called in the Domesday Book is another half mile further out but still has easy access to our centre. Another village of around 3,000 people who can come and see us at any time!
Weaverham is slightly bigger and slightly further away 3.3 miles and Cuddington another mile further away, but but both only 15 minutes away at most.
These are just a few of the places close by that can now count on us for any hearing issues that may arise.
