Tinnitus

What causes Tinnitus?

Tinnitus, which sounds like a buzzing or ringing/piercing noise, can be brought on in various ways:

  • Loud Noise Exposure: Continuous exposure to high levels of noise can harm the delicate hair cells within the inner ear, resulting in tinnitus.
  • Getting older: Hearing loss associated with ageing can be a contributing factor to it over time.
  • Blocking with Earwax: Accumulation of earwax can create pressure on the eardrum or block sound, potentially leading to experiencing tinnitus.
  • Ear Infections: Infections like otitis media can bring it on.
  • Medications: Some medications, including antibiotics and antidepressants, can induce it as a side effect.
  • Neck or Head Injuries: Injuries to the head or neck can damage the inner ear or auditory nerve, resulting in its occurrence as well.
  • Medical Conditions: Conditions such as high blood pressure or thyroid disorders may also contribute to its occurrence.

Within the inner ear, inner and outer hair cells are responsible for transmitting sounds to the brain for processing. Outer hair cells, being more exposed and susceptible to damage, may become impaired.

This impairment can permit unintended sound signals to reach inner hair cells and the brain. This leads to the perception of non-existent sound.

Effects:

  • Hearing Loss: It is often related to different degrees of hearing loss, from mild to severe.
  • Dizziness or Vertigo: Some people can also experience dizziness or vertigo, related to other inner ear issues.
  • Headaches: Headaches or migraines are sometimes involved in some cases.
  • Sleep Issues: The perceived noise can sometimes cause a loss of sleep leading to tiredness and other related health problems.
  • Anxiety and Depression: Are other related issues that some people experience.
